Design 1.
The original design brief for this project was to have a collage-type cover with McCarty Hall (the main College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) building) and a variety of student photos showing different CALS activities on campus. They really liked another piece I designed and wanted the same mix of black and white and color. So I designed this:



Design 2.
I also wanted to try something different, something a little simpler graphically. Since this is a booklet about donor opportunities to develop future programs at CALS, I came up with the title "Grow Our Future." I used a photo of a seedling growing to depict growth opportunities at CALS.



Design 3.
Then the client changed the design brief, stating that the main campus photo should be of the Century Tower, not McCarty Hall. With this photo change, the upper photo I had in the top left in Design 1 had to be moved to the top right and it looked weird, like it was floating in the clouds. So I rearranged the photos (some of them changed from the previous design) into an overlapping strip at all at the bottom ending up with this final approved design:



The inside design keeps that overlapping multi-layer feel but uses one image to depict each program area:

My Work: Japanese Magnolia Card

I design a holiday ecard every year for colleagues, friends and family. This year I decided to create a frosty top layer partially wiped away to reveal a flower (japanese magnolia from our garden - my husband's photo).

My Work: IFAS Annual Report

In this design for the IFAS Annual Report I veered away from the color photo heavy previous years and explored a different design style using large blocks of solid orange and solid white, heavy use of sepia tones (vintage style with color scaled back from the darks and light - instructions here) with color photos used sparingly for emphasis.

My Work: IFAS Research Roadmap

The IFAS Research Roadmap is a 12 page newspaper-like publication that summarizes and presents a faculty-driven plan for the future of IFAS Research. I took my design cues from the word "roadmap" in the title and created a road/highway theme. I built the highway scene from 4 different photos, adjusted the color and shadows, added texture and topped it off with a highway crest for the title.

My Work: Sri Nama by Bada Haridas

The music on Sri Nama, the latest album from Bada Haridas, is beautiful. Some tracks are more energetic with a slightly rougher "live" feel and other tracks are warm and mellow. I created a richly textured design that represented the music on this album and the devotional mood of Bada Haridas's kirtan. Listen at badaharidas.com.

My Work: Nassau Co. Master Gardeners banner

This banner promotes Nassau County Master Gardeners. My client specifically chose to only include a title, logo and website so this banner could be used for multiple events. I certainly enjoyed having all the extra space to work with.

Update: Final banner on the right. My client requested a different butterfly hovering on the top edge and her name and title added to the banner.

My Work: Blueberry Jamboree

I designed this fresh and friendly poster for the Escambia County's blueberry and bluegrass festival: the Blueberry Jamboree. Based on that design, I also created a 2 color t-shirt design and web header. I'm sure there will be more event materials to design as the event date gets closer.

Bonus: got to use Spoon Graphics Sticky Tape brushes.

Here's a cute little blueberry cartoon I designed recently. It's for a blueberry festival in Escambia County, Florida.

Update: I created another blueberry cartoon: a blueberry girl for the blueberry pageant. The original berry's coloring and shading got slightly reworked also. Here's my tutorial on how to make that vector tiara.

My Work: Center for Public Issues Education Logos

Here are 2 of the logos I designed for The Center for Public Issues Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources. I had to come up with an abstract way of depicting agriculture education and make the 11 word logo title work.

My Work: Plant Molecular & Cellular Biology Logos

I'm in logo mode. I worked on these a while back and have another logo project in process. Now if only I had shorter center or program names to work with... The logo I'm working on now has 11 words in the name.

My Work: Orange Tree Holiday Card

I designed this abstract orange tree holiday card as an e-card for my department to send out. It had to be somewhat generic but still graphically interesting and, if possible, include some aspect of what we do (Florida agricultural educational materials). A fun little project.

I designed this colorful card for a traditional Indian wedding I attended recently. The lotus and henna patterns both respect the traditional element and are arranged in a simple composition with this love quote I found. Thanks to keepdesigning.com for the free mendhi/henna vector art used here.

I created this Halloween-inspired slightly creepy montage (entitled Scarred) for the October 2008 Graphics.com/Photos.com Challenge. In this monthly contest, users create designs using the images provided (this month they provided background textures) plus whatever other images/graphics you like.

My Work: Fire in the South

Fire in the South 2 is a 32 page magazine/report on (obviously) fire in the South. It presents the comprehensive research of the Southern Wildfire Risk Assessment to legislators and fire professionals. The first Fire in the South report wasn't professionally designed and it showed. For this second report, my clients wanted a punchy, colorful magazine look that emphasized fire and fire colors.

I've been working pretty intensely on this project for the last week and a half. I've just sent off the final proofs to my client today. Yeah!

My Work: Extension Symposium postcard

Sometimes I just have to surrender. I work at the University of Florida and some clients want design with UF's college colors. So I stick on my Gator hat and Photoshop bleeds orange and blue.

My Work: Mandala Card

Right before I left for vacation, I designed this card for a friend of mine. I was inspired by the second character in the Florals2 font (free from dafont.com) to create this warm and rich mandala design. I love the way alternating colors and simple Photoshop effects can create a complete design from very few elements.

My Work: Simple Baby Shower Card

I made this simple and modern card for a friend's baby shower. I didn't have a whole lot of time to spend on it but it was still fun. I used a green and white color scheme to match the little hooded towel I bought for her baby. Font used: Helvetica.
