The Artwork of Gustav Klimt

Most people have probably seen Gustav Klimt's famous painting The Kiss. I think it's a beautiful painting and love the vibrant use of color. But my favorite is actually this beautiful rendering of mother and child, a closeup from the Three Ages of Woman painting. So much tenderness...

1984 and Animal Farm

I saw these excellent book covers in one of the airport bookshops overseas. I love the color schemes, subtle texture, use of rays of light, retro artwork and border styling. From Penguin Books UK.

Stitching a Panorama with Photomerge

Photoshop's Photomerge feature has completely automated the process of stitching together a panorama. It works even for non-tripod held panorama photos, like this one from my hike in the Swiss Alps.

The Photomerge feature works best if you use the panorama feature on your camera to assist you. If your camera doesn't have that feature, just remember to capture plenty of image overlap and try to keep the horizon in the same place in each photo. The steps:

  1. In Photoshop, open all of the image files you'd like to use in the panorama. (Photoshop requires at least 2 images.)
  2.  Choose File > Automate > Photomerge
  3. In the Photomerge dialog box, choose Auto and click on the Add Open Files button. Make sure Blend Images Together is checked. Click OK.
  4. Crop, apply Curves and clone as necessary to achieve your final image.

This 5 photo panorama was taken on the Blumen (flower) trail from Bachalpsee to Waldspitz in the Swiss Alps.

Details on/in Wood

The same point of view can get boring in photography so I try to both take in the entire scene and be attentive to any details that catch my eye. I found the door handle and the unique toilet door sign in Belgium. The flower-like cutout is on a pedestrian bridge in the Swiss Alps.

My Work: Mandala Card

Right before I left for vacation, I designed this card for a friend of mine. I was inspired by the second character in the Florals2 font (free from dafont.com) to create this warm and rich mandala design. I love the way alternating colors and simple Photoshop effects can create a complete design from very few elements.

I'm back

I'm back from vacation. Europe was wonderful. We visited Belgium, Switzerland and Sweden and even had a half-day in Amsterdam. Over the next week or so I'll be sharing photos and design I noticed on my trip.
