Minus is My New Plus

I've been looking around for a while for a decent free online file sharing service. I recently got introduced to Minus.com and I love it! Simple and clean interface, tons of space (up to 10 GB free), easy to specify public or private files.

Subtle Patterns for Websites

Subtle Patterns has a collection of free high quality patterns for website backgrounds. The patterns are mostly monochromatic but you can add your own color overlay in Photoshop as desired. The best feature of this site: click the Preview button on any pattern and the pattern will test live—filling the page.

MorgueFile — Free Stock Photos

The main free stock site I've used in the past is Stock.xchng but I've discovered another great free stock site: MorgueFile.

MorgueFile has a large collection of free stock photos, all of which are free for commercial use (see full license details here). The search feature can be a little clunky at first but it's because the site allows you greater search flexibility (search by color, file size, category, etc.). You can ignore the side filters and just search by one or more keywords using the search box on the top right.

I am having lots of fun looking for gems on this new site. A few favorites so far: multi-color, ferns, cherries, red bokeh

Font Squirrel - 100% Free Fonts for Commercial Use

If you're tired of searching through the thousands of fonts on sites like dafont.com (current free font count over 12,000) Font Squirrel is a great resource. They hand-pick free high quality commercial-use fonts. Their total font list is a manageable 659. It's such a relief not to plow through junk to find a few gems — the gems are already separated out!

The League of Movable Type: Free Open Source Fonts

The League of Movable Type provides free well-designed open source fonts. Some fonts are newly designed. Some are old but have become public domain from expired copyrights or for other reasons. Most of the fonts seem to be only 1 or 2 cuts but it's a high quality selection, well worth browsing.

Free High Quality Textures from Lost & Taken

Look at these gorgeous high quality textures from Lost and Taken. There's a huge collection of free textures - I'm stocking up!

Free Comic Sans Font Alternatives from Ban Comic Sans.com

Comic Sans - the font designers love to hate. Ban Comic Sans.com pokes fun at the inappropriate uses of Comic Sans (for example doctor's office letters or informational signs). Check out their free font list with Comic Sans alternatives.

Free Photoshop Action: White Photo Border

I've been looking for a simple clean white photo border/photo edge action and couldn't easily find what I wanted online. I wanted something a little more sophisticated than a solid white 50 pixel stroke but still very simple. I created this free Photoshop action with a hint of gradient on the white stroke and hint of inner shadow on the photo to add a little bit more dimension.

Note: This works best on images 4 x 6 at 300 dpi or about 1800 px wide. The action doesn't come with a drop shadow - that's just so you can see the border in this example.
